UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez took care of Junior dos Santos Saturday night at UFC 166, putting an end to their rivalry – at least for the time being.
Velasquez finished off dos Santos in the fifth round, earning his second consecutive victory over the former champion.
“I think it’ll be done for a while,” said Velasquez, on the post-fight show, when asked about facing dos Santos again. “Maybe five years down the line we’ll fight again, but not right now.”
After “Cigano” claimed a win in the first meeting, Velasquez came back with a vengeance, dominating him for five rounds in taking back the title. That set up the third encounter, and it went much the same as the second.
“In the second fight, we saw when he was backing up, we were throwing wild shots and missing,” he said. “But we tried to shorten them up and make them more direct and land more, which worked.”
