Brendan Schaub had a smile worth a million bucks on his face after choking Matt Mitrione out Saturday night at UFC 165.
Schaub locked in a D’arce choke with just over a minute left, securing the hold and tightening the grip even as Mitrione motioned that he was fine. Moment later, the ref stepped in and he was out.
“This is the happiest I have ever been,” Schaub said. “I am just so happy right now.”
Schaub, who trains with the likes of Mark Munoz and several Gracie fighters in California, added that “Venice, coffee on me if I get the ‘Submission of the Night’ bonus.”
The submission win was the first in the career of Schaub, who was a runner-up on The Ultimate Fighter. Mitrione competed on the same season as him, and the two went from friends to fighters over the past several weeks.
After the bout, it appeared things were patched up, as Mitrione came over to congratulate Schaub on the win.
