A hand injury to Chris Weidman has forced the postponement of a planned middleweight championship match with Vitor Belfort at UFC 181.
Instead, the main event for the December 6 card will feature Johny Hendricks and Robbie Lawler for the welterweight title. This championship match was originally rumored for early in 2015.
The co-main remains intact for UFC 181, as Anthony Pettis defends his lightweight title against Gilbert Melendez. A handful of other matches have been confirmed for the night.
Hendricks won the title with a decision win over Lawler in March. He suffered a torn bicep in the win, though, and has been on the sidelines since. Lawler scored a pair of victories over Jake Ellenberger and Matt Brown to secure a second shot at the title.
“I’m excited for this UFC title fight!” Lawler poster on Twitter after news of the bout. “Let’s do this! Thank u fans!”
The Weidman-Belfort bout will be rescheduled to a later date.
