Gennady Golovkin, better known around the boxing community as “GGG,” earned his 30th career knockout in 33 fights Saturday night, defending his middleweight title with a sixth round stoppage vs. Willie Monroe, Jr.
Golovkin, competing in front of a pro-Los Angeles crowd, improved to 33-0 and dealt Monroe just his second career loss in the process. He almost had him finished early from The Forum, but Monroe showed heart and battled back, even winning a round.
The champion has now scored 20 straight knockouts and could be set for a future fight vs. either Andre Ward, a fellow unbeaten former Olympian, or Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.
The card also featured a victory by Roman Gonzalez, as the flyweight improved to 43-0 with a victory over Edgar Sosa. Gonzalez finished the fight in the second by dropping him three times.
