With a perfectly-placed right hand, Deontay Wilder served notice Saturday night, retaining his WBC heavyweight title with a thrilling knockout of Artur Szpilka.
Fighting in front of Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis, Wilder picked Szpilka apart until the ninth round when he connected on a counter that caught the challenger coming in. Szpilka was knocked out cold, needing several minutes of attention from the medical staff to regain consciousness.
Wilder, who was up on all three scorecards entering the round, earned his third title defense. His night, though, wasn’t over there, as fellow two-belt champion Tyson Fury stormed the post-fight interview on Showtime with Wilder.
The two unbeaten heavyweights could be poised for a future fight, as Wilder (36-0) owns 35 knockouts in his career and Fury (25-0) is coming off a stunning upset of Wladimir Klitschko. First, though, Fury will need to get past a rematch with Klitschko.
