On the same night as Fabricio Werdum’s submission win over Cain Velasquez at UFC 188 to become the undisputed UFC heavyweight champion, boxing’s heavyweight crown was on the line.
Deontay Wilder successfully retained his WBC heavyweight title with a ninth round knockout of Eric Molina in Alabama.
Wilder (34-0) won the belt when he earned a decision over Bermane Stiverne earlier this year. He landed almost 100 more punches than Molina and connected on 47-percent overall.
In the boxing world, Wilder is one of three champions. Wladimir Klitschko holds the WBA (super), IBF and WBO heavyweight crowns, while Ruslan Chagaev owns the WBA title.
The card also featured Jose Pedraza defeated Andrey Klimov to win the vacant junior lightweight title.
