Ben Askren isn’t buying into the idea that Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney will simply let him sign a UFC deal with no fuss. The Bellator welterweight champ thinks it’s a ploy so the UFC offers less money as he’s still waiting for Rebney to waive the waiting period.
“I’m trying to read Bjorn,” said Askren to MMA Junkie. “He said he’s going to let me go, but he didn’t waive the matching period, obviously. It’s like saying you’ll let your dog go, but you still have a leash on him. So, we’ll see. It’s going to get interesting.”
In July, Askren completed his Bellator contract with his fourth title defense to go 12-0. The number of title defenses is a record as is his nine fights under the promotion’s banner.
Bellator had a memorable contract dispute with former champion Eddie Alvarez, which was resolved after about eight months.
