ONE welterweight champion Ben Askren is a confident individual.
And he has every right to be.
Askren, who is unbeaten and a former Bellator champion, will look to remain that way when he faces Agilan Thani at ONE: Dynasty of Heroes on May 26.
The former University of Missouri wrestling standout believes in himself because of what he refers to as his “trump card,” as he described in a recent interview with ONE.com.
“It does not matter what my opponent’s strengths and weaknesses are, because at the end of the day, I have got the trump card. If he cannot stop my wrestling, which he cannot, then he is going to be on his back, and he is going to get beaten up,” Askren said. “Once they are on their back, they only have one choice, and that is to fight off their back. Usually, it is just not enough, and by usually, I mean it always is never enough.”
After his run to a pair of NCAA Div. I wrestling titles, Askren competed in the Olympics before embarking on his career in MMA. That has featured “Funky” putting together a record of 15-0 with one no-contest.
Thani is 7-0 and coming off a finish of Jeff Huang from this past February.
