The first round matchups for the upcoming Bellator 142 light heavyweight tournament were announced Friday night during Bellator 141.
Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal battles Linton Vassell, while Emanuel Newton welcomes Phil Davis to Bellator in the other opening round contest.
The winner of the one-night tournament will receive a title shot against either current champion Liam McGeary or Tito Ortiz. Those two collide at the same card.
Davis (13-3) will be making his promotional debut after signing with Bellator after the completion of his UFC contract. The former Penn State University wrestling standout won four of his final six, including a victory over former champion Lyoto Machida.
Newton (25-8-1) is a former Bellator champion, dropping the title this past February via decision to McGeary. The loss snapped a seven-fight winning streak which included two victories over Lawal.
Lawal (15-4) previously held the Strikeforce title and is on a three-fight win streak. Since joining Bellator, he has gone 6-3, losing decisions to Newton and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson.
Vassell (15-4) challenged Newton for the belt last October on the heels of a nine-fight win streak, but was submitted in the fifth round. He rebounded with a TKO victory this past February over Sokoudjou.
The Bellator card will also feature kickboxing matches being put on by Glory, as both a cage and a ring will be present inside the SAP Center in San Jose.
