Bellator 99: Diego Nunes Feels Patricio Freire Is The Biggest Threat In Featherweight Tournament

Diego Nunes and Patricio Freire have been placed together in the opening round of Bellator’s Season 9 featherweight tournament. It’s perfect booking by Bellator as Nunes believes the winner will take everything.

“I think we are the best two fighters in the tournament,” said Nunes to MMA Junkie. “It couldn’t be better – I’m starting out with the most difficult opponent. I was expecting to face Patricio in the final. But I think Bellator made a great booking, Diego Nunes vs. Patricio ‘Pitbull’ to kick off this tournament.”

Freire has been in the tournament twice and made it to the finals both times, leaving the victor once. He dropped a split-decision to champion Pat Curran to start the year.

Nunes had been with the WEC and UFC since 2008 when given his release this year. At 18-4, his last 11 fights have all ended via decision.

Bellator 99 is later today, September 13.  Nunes-Freire will headline the card out of the Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, CA.
