Bellator MMA crowned a new leader in the welterweight division Friday night, as Douglas Lima defeated Rick Hawn to secure the vacant title at Bellator 117.
Hawn’s corner was asked if they wanted to stop the contest after seeing him go down to several vicious leg kicks by Lima, and they did. The end came in the second round.
“I am super excited,” Lima said. “Getting the belt is something I have been dreaming about since the last time I tried to win it. I am feeling good, blessed.”
The card featured several spectacular finishes, as Jordan Parsons delivered a knockout just four seconds into the second round vs. Tim Bazer to start the prelims. Julio Cesar Neves and Anthony Smith each added quick victories before the main card started.
“I thought Julio looked great,” Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney told FightLine after the post-fight press conference. “He looked cool, calm. I thought he looked sharp.”
Also on the prelims, Ben Crowder suffered a devastating leg injury, as he was caught off balance against Joe Vedepo. Crowder had to be carried out of the cage and was taken immediately to the hospital for further evaluations.
“I saw it back in the truck on slow-mo and it was just awful,” Rebney said. “There was just nowhere for the leg to go. You feel horrible and hope and pray that doesn’t happen.
“I haven’t heard an actual medical report, but (that is one) you just know is going to be bad.”
Patricky Pitbull and Marcin Held advanced to meet in the finals of the season 10 lightweight tournament. They will collide next month on the prelims portion of Bellator 120, the first pay-per-view by the promotion.
