Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal vs. Mikhail Zayats

We now head to the light heavyweight tournament, as our first semifinal sees Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal meet Mikhail Zayats.

Lawal (11-3) is a former Strikeforce champion who lost to Emanuel Newton last November in a bout for the interim Bellator title. He has posted a 3-2 mark since joining the promotion in 2013.

Zayats (22-7) submitted Aaron Rosa last October, pushing his Bellator record to 3-1. That includes a TKO victory over Renato Sobral and a decision loss to Newton.

Round 1: Lawal has quite the corner, as Jeff Mayweather and Roy Nelson are helping him. Lawal drops for a single-leg and gets it with his brute force. Zayats does a nice job of working back to his feet, avoiding any damage. Lawal with a big right to the body and an even bigger left to the face. Zayats stood still for a brief moment after the combo. Lawal taking a page out of his possible pro wrestling career with a “heart punch,” or it was a strike that just missed the face. Big right from Zayats lands, as does another, and the underdog appears to have his feet set now. Zayats fakes a takedown attempt and throws a huge head kick that just misses.

Round 2: Stiff right from Zayats as he catches Lawal coming in too far. Lawal gets in on a takedown, grabbing hold of Zayats, but he can’t keep him on the ground. Not a good sign for Lawal, but he shoots again. Lots of booing from the crowd, as these two have yet to explode on one another in this round. Zayats defends another takedown attempt by Lawal with relative ease.

Round 3: Lawal doing a better job of pushing the pace, dropping down now for a takedown. Zayats, though, is doing a great job of sprawling, but he’s unable to avoid it this time. Solid left by Lawal gets through. Zayats slips and Lawal just misses catching him with a huge left on the way up. One minute left and either fighter can claim this round – and likely the bout – with a strong finish. Body kick from Zayats, and a spinning back fist.
