Bellator 101: Joe Warren Initially Told By Doctors He Must Retire

After some delay, Joe Warren will get his chance in the semifinals of today’s Bellator bantamweight tournament. A few backs, Warren was on his way to the airport for his Bellator 98 meeting with Nick Kirk when a phone call by the promotion said the Connecticut commission refused to clear him.

“They were telling me that I had a stroke,” said Warren to MMA Fighting. “That I was never fighting [again]. It was crazy.”

After countless tests with several neurosurgeons over the course of a few weeks, the final diagnosis was an error on the medical end.

“It was all a mistake,” said Warren. “We had three different doctors reading the image wrong from thousands of miles away.”

Warren hasn’t fought in almost a year and returns off a stint coaching on Fight Master. Kirk is 1-1 for the year and returns to the promotion off a submission win of Ben Miller.

Bellator 101 is from the Rose Garden in Portland, OR and FightLine will be there with the play-by-play. Warren-Kirk headlines the show, with the main card airing live on Spike TV.
