Antonio “Big Foot” Silva had his chance to become the top dog of the UFC’s heavyweight division when he challenged Cain Velasquez for the strap. Like their first encounter, it was all Velasquez as Silva finds himself on the outskirts of another title shot.
“I have a long way to go now,” said Silva to TATAME. “Velasquez has [Fabricio] Werdum, [Daniel] Cormier and Josh Barnett. I think a win over [Mark] Hunt puts me right there in the middle again, but I’m way behind in the line now. There are many people deserving.”
Of the three names mentioned, two are considered close to the next No. 1 contender status in Werdum and Cormier. Both kept their streaks going with wins this year. Barnett made his UFC return after a decade to stop Frank Mir.
Silva is now 0-2 against Velasquez, dropping each fight in the first round. Hunt is coming off a loss to Junior dos Santos.
Those two heavyweights are set for UFC Fight Night 33. It’s December 21 from the Brisbane Entertainment Centre in Australia.
