Andrei Arlovski has been in MMA since 1999.
The former UFC heavyweight champion isn’t new to the games that are played behind the scenes of the sport.
So when he found out that the UFC had paired him up with Alistair Overeem for UFC Fight Night 89, Arlovski knew what would happen.
The two train at the same gym, Jackson-Wink MMA in New Mexico, and share many of the same coaches. While that will not happen Sunday night when they square off, Arlovski (25-11) knows the strain it has put on Greg Jackson and Mike Winkeljohn, among others.
“He put Greg Jackson and Mike Winkeljohn in a spot. My opinion, it’s not right,” said Arlovski, during a recent interview on UFC Tonight. “We don’t have a relationship.”
The two have shared practice time together in the past, but that is definitely not on the docket for the future.
“We sparred two times. The first time a couple years ago when he came to Jackson Wink and second time before his fight with JDS because Greg Jackson asked me,” Arlovski said. “When I sparred with him, I noticed he has great knees, very dangerous knees elbow and feet. This is going to help me with this upcoming match against him.”
As for a future session together, Arlovski said “No, absolutely not.”
