Former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva provided a statement through his manager to regarding his failed drug test for two banned substances.

It was confirmed on Tuesday night that “The Spider” had both drostanolone and androstane in his system during pre-fight testing conducted by the Nevada Athletic Commission in January. Neither result was made available prior to Silva fighting – and defeating – Nick Diaz at UFC 183.

“I’ve been competing in this sport for a very long time,” the statement read. “This is my nineteenth fight in the UFC. I have been thoroughly tested many times and have never had a positive drug test.

“I have not taken any performance-enhancing drugs. My stance on drugs is, and will always be, the same. I’m an advocate for a clean sport.”

Silva continued, saying he is “consulting with my advisors right now to explore all of my options and intend to fight this allegation and clear my name. I will not make any further comments until my team advises me to do so.”

He was making his return to the Octagon for the first time since 2013 when a broken leg stopped a title fight with Chris Weidman.
