Alistair Overeem earned his first finish in just under three years Saturday night, stopping Stefan Struve at UFC on FOX 13.
Earlier this year, Overeem earned a decision over Frank Mir, which was his first victory since a 2011 first round stoppage vs. Brock Lesnar. He added Struve to his list with some vicious ground-and-pound from Phoenix.
“It was all strategic,” Overeem said. “I was prepared for everything, but because he is such a big guy, I thought it would be clever to take him down and destroy him there.”
The former Strikeforce champion was coming off a first round TKO loss to Ben Rothwell this past September, which dropped him to just 1-3 over a four-fight span since the Lesnar win. Overeem, who appeared unsure of what to do with the 7-foot Struve, took him down and worked things on the ground – which negated the height advantage for his fellow Dutch fighter.
Struve (25-7) was fighting for the first time since finding out he has an enlarged heart and having surgery for a leaking valve. He is 4-2 in his last six.
