Alexander Gustafsson now knows his opponent and date to secure another shot at becoming the UFC light heavyweight champion.
UFC president Dana White confirmed the booking of Gustafsson vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira for March in England. The card will take place from London’s O2 Arena and likely be a Fight Night card.
Gustafsson (15-2) is coming off a loss to Jon Jones for the title via decision. Many pushed for an immediate rematch, but the UFC went with Glover Teixeira for Jones’ next challenge.
Nogueira (21-5) has posted back-to-back victories, including a win over former champion Rashad Evans, but has missed plenty of time due to injuries. He has had matches with Dan Henderson and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua scrapped in his UFC career.
With a win, Gustafsson would become the next challenger for the title. The same, though, is not true for Nogueira, according to White.
“It’s not a title eliminator,” he wrote on Twitter. “If Nog wins he doesn’t get a title shot. Plus Lil Nog is ranked number 5, not irrelevant.”
