Al Iaquinta Takes Us Into UFC 164 Fight-Week Prep (Exclusive)

Al Iaquinta will get back to action this Saturday night at UFC 164: Henderson vs. Pettis in Milwaukee.

Iaquinta, a former runner-up on The Ultimate Fighter, faces Ryan Couture as part of the Facebook prelims broadcast. It has been over a year since he last competed due to a pair of injuries.

As he embarks on the final hours before weigh-ins, Iaquinta granted FightLine an exclusive interview into his time in Milwaukee preparing for the fight.

“I got to Milwaukee on Tuesday. As I arrived to the airport, I was picked up by UFC staff, driven to the hotel and brought up to a room designated for all the paperwork and other items needed to be completed,” Iaquinta said. “Once all that was done, I had my weight checked to make sure I was somewhat close to my fight weight.

“They have everything down to a science at this point.”

Iaquinta proceeded to get himself checked into the hotel and went for a workout that night.

“I worked out in a rather large meeting room that they have matted. There are two workout rooms: one for the red corner and one for the blue corner come fight night,” he said. “They do this so we won’t be working out in the same room with our opponents.”

One thing the New Yorker is ever-conscious of is his weight, saying, “I am constantly checking my weight on the scale, which has been calibrated and is exactly the same as the scale I will be using on the actual weigh-ins.”

Wednesday, he went to Roufusport MMA in Milwaukee and was able to get a workout in. This is the home of main event fighter Anthony Pettis and others.

“Duke Roufus (head trainer) was very welcoming, letting me use his facility,” Iaquinta stated. “I worked out with Pat DeFranco for about an hour, drilling all the techniques I will be looking to pull off on Saturday.”

Another short workout took place Wednesday night, followed by the media tour on Thursday. Iaquinta planned on heading back to Roufusport for one final “real workout” Thursday night before he will “hit the sauna (on Friday) and sweat out any additional weight that needs to come off.”
