Gleison Tibau not only won at UFC 164 over Jamie Varner, but he broke a record at the same time. The 30-year-old became the youngest person in the UFC to get 20 fights.
Reaching that number wasn’t easy as the lightweight had major weight cutting. 24 hours before Friday’s weigh-ins, Tibau tweeted that he still needed to drop 17 more pounds. He somehow did it, but was tightlipped on how.
“My secret,” said Tibau to MMA Fighting.
During the fight Tibau looked massive and there was no need to adjust the TV set. He said he weighed just over 180 pounds during the fight, meaning he packed on roughly 25 pounds since the weigh-ins.
“It’s mentally hard,” said Tibau. “Water adds weight.”
With Tibau’s split-decision win over Varner he improves to 28-9. He’s 2-1 this year with a submission over John Cholish.
Varner hasn’t been able to find the same luck as he did in the WEC. For the WEC, he was their lightweight champ but struggled towards the end and he’s now 2-2 for the UFC.
The lightweights closed the prelims of UFC 164, which aired on FOX Sports 1. The show came from the BMO Harris Bradley Center in Milwaukee, WI.
